Home Window Styles for Atlanta, Georgia
& Surrounding Areas
There
are many issues to consider during a home window replacement
project in the greater Atlanta, Georgia area. Many homeowners,
for example, struggle with decisions about which home window
manufacturer to use, what materials their windows should made
from, how energy efficient their windows are, and whether or
not the windows will provide good protection against storm damage.
In addition to these matters, there is the question of what
home window style will best fit their needs.
Home window styles can be broken down into
9 basic categories: single hung, double hung, awning, bay windows,
bow windows, garden, picture windows, casement, and sliders.
The good news is that if you are interested in replacing your
home windows, often
you can mix and match home window styles, as well as change
styles from one to another. For example, wouldn’t it be great
to replace that old single hung window over your kitchen sink
with a new slider window? This is one of the many perks of replacement
windows; it is an investment that allows you to remove a
hard-to-operate home window at your Atlanta, Georgia house and
replace it with a more functional and beautiful one.
The following is a brief description of home
window styles. Depending on building codes, it is possible that
some of these home window styles are not offered in the Atlanta,
Georgia area:
- Single hung window—only one glass unit
is moveable within the window pane. The most common single
hung window has two glass units, one on top of the other.
The top glass unit remains stationary. The bottom glass unit
slides up and down to open or close the window.
- Double hung window—has top glass unit
and bottom glass unit in a single frame. Both glass units
can slide up and down to open and close the window.
- Awning—has hinges along the top and swings
out from the bottom. True to its name, an awning window looks
similar to an awning when it’s open.
- Bay window—has three glass units. The
center glass unit is flanked on either side by glass panels
that are angled at 30 degrees or 45 degrees. This gives the
bay window a 3-dimensional appearance, curving outward from
the wall of your home.
- Bow window—similar to a bay window in
its 3-dimensional effect, a bow window has 4 or more glass
units which are arranged to give the window an outwardly arching
shape.
- Garden window—also similar to a bay window,
a garden window is a projecting window with three sides. Two
of the sides can be opened for air flow. In addition, a garden
window includes a glass top for sunlight and a bottom shelf
for your houseplants.
- Picture window—an oversized home window
that provides maximized views. A picture window is completely
stationary because the glass is permanently fused into the
frame. It cannot be opened or moved at all.
- Casement window—opens on hinges outward,
similar to a door.
- Slider window—slides open horizontally,
similar to a sliding glass door.
